In October I took a continuing education workshop focused on Emotional Intelligence from the Institute for Health and Human Potential called “Leadership Reputation”. In this course we discussed the time that matters most to provide the right amount of heart and edge and ways to reframe situations that you are trying to avoid.
It turns out that the best time to react in an emotionally intelligent way is during "17%" moments, which are the times when you or the person you are interacting with is stressed.
And it's during the 17% moments that we tend to avoid approaching the situation for resolution. The heart and edge talks to using the right amount of empathy and understanding with the right amount of directness to get the business situation met. If you are avoiding something right now (and who amongst us isn't?) try leveraging the below framework to talk yourself into approaching the situation for a positive outcome. Ask yourself “what are the consequences to my reputation (internally and externally) if I approach those 17% moments with heart & edge?”
